Program Overview

Introduction to Building Services Engineering

Building Services Engineering at Canterbury Christ Church University is a program designed to equip students with vital skills in designing HVAC, electrical, and public health systems for sustainable buildings. The focus is on creating comfortable and efficient internal environments, with an emphasis on real-world challenges to prepare students for the building services sector of the Engineering and Construction industry.

Program Overview

The program aims to develop specialist engineering skills essential for designing, managing, and optimizing building environmental systems. These include HVAC, lighting, power, water, and controls. The goal is to prepare students for impactful careers in the building services sector or further academic pursuits, enabling them to apply their expertise effectively in creating comfortable, efficient, and sustainable buildings.

Academic Structure

The academic year is split into two semesters: one running from September to January and a second one from late January to May. Each semester, students study different modules covering various areas of Building Services Engineering.

Year 1 Core Modules

  • Semester 1:
    • Integrated Design and Professional Practice
    • Applied Mathematics and Programming
  • Semester 2:
    • Integrated Electro-Mechanical Systems and Practices
    • Material Science and Testing

Welcome and Induction

The welcome and induction period is an essential introduction to the course and the wider university, helping students feel confident and prepared for their studies. The Welcome Week is scheduled for the week commencing 15th September 2025.

Pre-course Reading

Detailed reading lists for each module and the course are provided during Welcome Week and included in module handbooks. Recommended pre-course reading includes:

  • Book: "A history of engineering in classical and medieval times" by D. Hill, 2013, Routledge.
  • Visual Recommendation: "Megastructures: Engineering Marvels"

Teaching and Support

Students receive full support as they begin their studies, with engineering staff available to support them with their studies. The staff have extensive knowledge in building performance and environmental systems.
