Valley Scholars Program
The Valley Scholars program is a comprehensive initiative designed to support students in their academic and personal development. The program is tailored for students who demonstrate academic promise and motivation, with a focus on first-generation college students.
Eligibility
To be considered for admission to the Valley Scholars program, a student must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be a Virginia resident and United States citizen or permanent resident.
- Be in 7th grade and attend a participating middle school in one of the partnering school districts: Augusta County, Harrisonburg City, Page County, Rockingham County, Shenandoah County, Staunton City, and Waynesboro City Schools.
- Be in good academic standing and demonstrate academic promise and motivation.
- Meet financial eligibility guidelines verified by parent/guardian tax documentation.
- Be a first-generation college student, meaning that parent(s) or guardian(s) have not graduated from a four-year college or university.
- Have the full support of parent(s) or guardian(s) for participation in the program.
- Be recommended for participation by a teacher, principal, or guidance counselor from the student's school.
- Commit to attending week-long summer enrichment programs, as well as Saturday or after-school programs throughout the school year.
Application Process
The application process for the Valley Scholars program involves the following steps:
- Review all eligibility requirements to ensure eligibility for the program.
- Complete and submit the Valley Scholars Application, which includes:
- Valley Scholars application
- Required essay
- Proof of financial eligibility Applications received after the deadline may not be considered.
Selection Criteria
The Valley Scholars Program selects participants based on the following criteria:
- Eligibility based on program requirements
- Evaluation of the candidate's application
- Overall academic record, taking into consideration special circumstances such as grade trend during middle school or family circumstances that may impact academic performance
- Applicant interview with the selection committee, which will occur on a school day for selected applicants
