Program Overview

Computer Science Program

The Computer Science program at James Madison University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of computer science principles and practices. As a computer science major, students will analyze and solve problems across a wide range of applications, develop solutions that can be computationally implemented, and strive for the best solutions while using resources effectively.

Program Overview

The program is part of the Department of Computer Science, an academic unit within the College of Integrated Science and Engineering. It puts students in the middle of the exploding information revolution, where they study technological advances such as object-oriented software, communication networks, multimedia systems, information security, and artificial intelligence. Students will learn about computing technologies used by today's professionals and how to use these technologies to solve real-world problems.

Degrees and Concentrations

  • Degrees Offered:
    • B.S. in Computer Science
  • Concentrations:
    • None
  • Minors:
    • Computer Science
    • Logic and Reasoning
    • Robotics

Curriculum and Research

Students will learn to analyze problems, design solutions, implement solutions using multiple computing technologies, test and install those solutions, and communicate those solutions to others in written and verbal presentations. The program includes research opportunities in collaboration with faculty members, allowing students to devise new and better ways of using computers and addressing particular challenges in areas such as mobile computing, robotics, artificial intelligence, web-based systems, or digital forensics.

Career Planning

A successful career and a meaningful life are the ultimate goals. The program prepares students for internships, great first jobs, or top graduate school appointments. Career opportunities include positions in computer science, programming, computer engineering, and cyber engineering.
