Program Overview

Introduction to the Madison Orientation Adventure Trip (MOAT)

The Madison Orientation Adventure Trip (MOAT) is a three-night, four-day adventure program designed for new JMU students. This program allows students to meet with welcoming and knowledgeable student trip leaders to tent camp, rock climb, hike, and canoe in the Shenandoah Valley. No prior experience is necessary, making it an excellent opportunity for new students to connect with others before classes start.


Program Details

  • Duration and Location: The program is based out of Stokesville Campground in Stokesville, VA, which is a 30-minute drive from JMU and close to the George Washington National Forest and Jefferson National Forest.
  • Activities: Participants will engage in tent camping, hiking, team building, and have the option to choose between additional activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, standup paddle boarding, or an extended hiking adventure.
  • Cost: The cost of MOAT is $325, which includes equipment, meals, instruction, and transportation for the three-night, four-day trip. Financial support is available for students with financial needs.
  • Registration: Registration opens on May 1, 2026, at 9 a.m. and will remain open until the listed registration deadline for each session unless filled. Students need to create a guest account to register.

Trip Sessions

  • Summer MOAT Sessions:
    • SUMMER MOAT #1: July 29 - August 1, 2026 (30 student max)
    • SUMMER MOAT #2: August 5 - 8, 2026 (30 student max)
    • SUMMER MOAT #3: August 12 - 15, 2026 (30 student max)
  • Early Move-In MOAT: August 19 - 22, 2026 (100 student max)

Eligibility and Attendance

  • Eligible Participants: All new JMU students, including first-year and transfer students, are welcome to attend.
  • Attendance: Around 100 new students attend the August MOAT session, while summer sessions are limited to 30 students each.

What to Expect

  • Leadership: Trips are led by trained JMU undergraduate student employees who are certified in Wilderness First Aid and supervised by a professional staff member.
  • Accessibility: Efforts are made to ensure the program is accessible to students of all abilities. Participants with dietary restrictions or disabilities are encouraged to communicate their needs in advance.

Preparation and Packing

  • Essential Items: A detailed list of essential clothing and equipment is provided, including sleeping bags, hiking boots, and personal gear. Some items are available for rent from UREC.
  • Prohibited Items: Cell phones, large knives, alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs are not allowed on the trip.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

  • Program Cancellation: In the event of a program cancellation due to low enrollment or other factors, participants may choose to transfer to another MOAT trip if slots are available or receive a full refund.
  • Participant Cancellation: Participants must request cancellation by the withdrawal deadline to receive a refund, subject to a 10% cancellation fee.

Financial Assistance

  • MOAT Financial Assistance Application: Available for students with financial needs to help them participate in the MOAT program. Applications are processed on a rolling basis until the registration deadline or until the grant is fully dispersed.
