Introduction to the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Speech-Language Pathology (residential) prepares students for the field of Speech-Language Pathology. It is a two-year, full-time program (five semesters). The program is designed to provide a broad spectrum of academic and practicum experiences necessary for the education of specialists who deal with disorders of human communication and swallowing.

Program Details

• The program includes clinical practical experiences in a wide range of professional settings, including the JMU Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Clinics, various hospital and rehabilitation programs, and the public schools.
• The academic and clinical components of the program are consistent with the requirements for certification in Speech-Language Pathology of the Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and for health and education licensures in Speech-Language Pathology by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Students applying for admission to the M.S. program in Speech-Language Pathology should be aware that some of the clinical placement sites will require a current criminal records check.

Graduate Assistantships

• Graduate Assistantships (GAs) are available on a competitive basis to full-time graduate students.
• These awards are funded from a variety of sources, including the university, endowments, organizations, and external grant funding from both public and private sources.
• No additional application is required for Graduate Assistantships.

Accreditation

• The Master of Science (M.S.) education program in Speech-Language Pathology (residential) at James Madison University is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
• The program meets the requirements for relevant Virginia licensure.

Complaint Statement

• Any student, instructional staff member, speech-language pathologist, audiologist, and/or member of the public may submit a complaint about any CAA accredited program or program in candidacy status.
• All complaints must be signed and in writing to the Chair, Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Program Location

• The Communication Science and Disorders Program is located on the first floor of the Health and Behavioral Studies Building, which is located at 235 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Harrisonburg, VA 22807.
• Metered parking may be available in the Grace Street Parking Garage located immediately adjacent to the Health and Behavioral Studies Building.
