Introduction to the M.Ed. in Education with a Concentration in Spanish Language and Culture for Educators

The M.Ed. in Education with a concentration in Spanish Language and Culture for Educators is designed for licensed Spanish teachers and professionals in related fields who want to deepen their expertise in pedagogy, Spanish language, and Spanish-speaking cultures while continuing to work full time.

Program Structure

  • Summer 1: Six weeks in Harrisonburg at JMU
  • Fall and Spring: Online evening classes (synchronous and asynchronous)
  • Summer 2: Six weeks in Salamanca at USAL
  • Fall 2: Online coursework

Program and Curriculum

Students complete 36 graduate credits in a curriculum focused on Spanish linguistics, pedagogical foundations, and Spanish culture. The program follows a cohort model, combining online coursework with two six-week summer residencies--first at JMU in Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA and then at USAL in Salamanca, Spain.

  • Both summer sessions include academic excursions that explore cultural and historical sites, providing immersive, real-world learning experiences across the U.S. and Europe.
  • Each university has a program director and a two-person faculty committee overseeing academic quality, and students receive support from faculty and staff at both institutions.

Program Costs

The total estimated program cost for the full 18 months is:

  • $18,620 -- Virginia residents
  • $19,120 -- Non-Virginia residents This includes tuition and a supplemental program fee covering enrollment, summer program activities, excursions, and entry fees. Not included: airfare, books, meals, lodging, passport fees, or personal expenses.

Admissions Requirements

Students are responsible for securing housing during summer sessions at JMU and USAL. Financial aid is available through JMU's Office of Financial Aid.
