Introduction to the JMU Kodaly Teacher Training Program
The James Madison University Kodaly Teacher Training program is a comprehensive course designed to enhance musicianship, develop long-range planning skills, and provide teachers with new songs, games, techniques, and ideas. The program is endorsed by the Organization of American Kodaly Educators and is held during the summer.
Program Overview
The JMU Kodaly Teacher Training program offers Levels I, II, and III, each with a unique focus:
- Level I: Early-childhood through 2nd grade pedagogy, pentatonic music
- Level II: 3rd and 4th grade pedagogy, diatonic music, and introduction to modes
- Level III: 5th grade through middle school pedagogy, diatonic, modal, and chromatic music
Course Structure
The program consists of several components:
- Solfege/Musicianship: 2 hours of personal musicianship training daily, using solfege, rhythm syllables, and other tools
- Pedagogy/Methodology: 2 hours of instruction in Kodaly-inspired pedagogy daily, focusing on philosophy, history, singing, moving, reading, and notating music
- Materials/Folksong Research: 90 minutes daily, learning about choosing excellent quality songs, authentic collection of song material, and analyzing songs for teaching
- Conducting: 70 minutes daily, building conducting skills from novice to expert levels
- Ensemble: 70 minutes daily, primarily a choral experience with opportunities for recorder and other instruments
Fees and Housing
- Workshop Fee (Non-Credit): $950
- For credit in-state: $1,584.00 (3 credit course)
- For credit out-of-state: $3,546.00 (3 credit course)
- Housing: Available in air-conditioned apartments, with options for double or single occupancy
- Meals: Available for purchase in JMU dining facilities, with options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

- For-credit students must complete the non-degree seeking student application form and select the appropriate MUED course option
- A $150.00 deposit is required to reserve a spot, with reimbursement for those paying for credit once tuition has been paid
