Program Overview
Introduction to the Hospitality Management Program
The Hospitality Management program at James Madison University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the hospitality industry. The program is tailored to meet the needs of students who are interested in pursuing a career in hospitality management.
Transfer Pathways for Hospitality Management
Students who are earning a transferable associate degree from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) or Richard Bland College (RBC) can view the B.S. Hospitality Management Transfer Guide. This guide shows the courses to take at the community college for the best 2-year plus 2-year pathway to the major at JMU.
Equivalent Courses for Hospitality Management
The following courses can help toward the major at JMU:
- ECO 202 (VCCS) / ECON 202 (RBC) = ECON 201, Introduction to Microeconomics
- ITE 152 (VCCS) / None (RBC) = CIS 204, Computer Information Systems Fundamentals for Non-Business Majors
- ACC 211 and 212 (VCCS) / None (RBC) = COB 241 and 242, Principles of Financial and Managerial Accounting
Advising Notes
- ITE 100 from Nova or Southside CC and ITE 120 from Blue Ridge, Laurel Ridge, and Piedmont VA CC will also satisfy the CIS 204 requirement.
- ACC 211 and 212 will satisfy the ACTG 244 requirement for the General Business Minor.
Additional Requirements
- Hospitality Management students are required to complete 600 hours of hospitality work experience prior to enrolling in HM 333 at JMU.
- Hospitality Management students also earn a minor in General Business.
- Differential tuition for College of Business majors/minors: Students will be charged an additional $50 per credit for all College of Business courses (with the exception of ECON 200).
Program Details
- Most Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science (A.S.), and Associate of Arts & Sciences (A.A.&S.) degrees are transferable.
- JMU Next Transfer Advisors are available to assist students in selecting courses and planning to transfer to JMU.
- To be considered a competitive student for admission, students should have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and successfully completed college coursework in these core subject areas: English, mathematics, social science, and lab science.
