Program Overview

Program Overview

The graduate program at James Madison University is a comprehensive and rigorous course of study designed to prepare students for advanced careers in their chosen field.

Application Deadline

Applications for Fall admission will be considered from October 1 until March 1 or until all available seats in the program are filled. To ensure consideration for a Graduate Assistantship, all application materials must be submitted by February 1. Applications from outside North America and Europe must be submitted by February 1 to allow sufficient time for obtaining travel and visa documents to study in the U.S.

Program Begins

The program begins in the Fall semester.

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions should be uploaded with the electronic application and may be used for departmental admission review purposes. If offered admission, official transcripts from any institution from which a degree has been awarded must be submitted to the JMU Graduate School to finalize admission. Transcripts are considered official if they are sent to JMU directly from the issuing institution.

Required by Program

  • Submit a statement of intent that explains how the graduate program relates to the applicant's prior experience, how specific faculty research agendas speak to the applicant's own interests, and how the program fits into the applicant's long-term professional goals.
  • Provide 20-30 pages (or equivalent) of academic and/or professional work samples, such as essays, reports, proposals, websites, or visual campaigns.
  • Submit at least three letters of recommendation from people who are qualified to comment on the applicant's academic preparation and professional experience.

International Applicants

International applicants must provide additional documentation, including transcripts and credential evaluations from non-US academic institutions. Details regarding these requirements can be found on the Transcripts & Credential Evaluation webpage.

Admission Criteria

Applicants will be notified of their application status by early March. The admission decision is based on a comprehensive review of the applicant's materials, including transcripts, statement of intent, work samples, and letters of recommendation.
