Bachelor of Arts in Spanish

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the Spanish language and culture.

The total program consists of 40 semester hours.


Prerequisite Requirements

    • SPAN 210: Intermediate Spanish I: Short Stories (4 semester hours)
    • SPAN 211: Intermediate Spanish II: Short Films (4 semester hours)
  • Total Semester Hours: 8

Core Requirements

  • 25-28 semester hours
  • Course List:
    • ANTH 240: Language and Culture (4 semester hours)
    • or ENG 270: The Foundations of Linguistics
    • SPAN 414: Spanish Composition & Advanced Grammar (4 semester hours)
    • SPAN 320: Hispanic Civilization and Culture I (4 semester hours)
    • or SPAN 321: Hispanic Civilization and Culture II
    • SPAN 330: Second Language Teaching (4 semester hours)
    • SPAN 350: The Indigenous Writer-Translator (4 semester hours)
    • SPAN 499: Senior Project (1-4 semester hours)

Electives

Additional upper division Spanish courses are required to complete a total of 40 semester hours. Many of these courses may be taken abroad. Literature in translation courses do not apply toward the major, with the exception of SPAN 386: Chicana/o Movement through Literature.


Study Abroad

Spanish majors are strongly encouraged to supplement their La Verne language program with study in an approved program in a Spanish-speaking country.
