Program Overview

Introduction to the Civil Engineering Online Master's Degree

The Civil Engineering Online Master's Degree is a graduate program offered by the School of Engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology. The program is designed to prepare graduates for a career in civil engineering, with the option to pursue advanced studies and become a licensed professional civil engineer.

Program Overview

The curriculum is designed to provide a flexible and accessible educational experience, allowing students to engage with coursework, faculty, and peers from anywhere in the world. The program offers two graduate degree options: Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering (M.Eng. CE) and Master of Science in Civil Engineering (M.S. CE) with a thesis.

Graduate Degree Options

  • Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering (M.Eng. CE): This course-based degree program is intended to prepare students for engineering practice, with a curriculum that balances theory with practical application.
  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering (M.S. CE): This thesis and research-based degree program is designed for students who want to pursue advanced studies and become a licensed professional civil engineer.

Program Requirements

Each program requires thirty-one (31) credits to graduate. The Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering (M.Eng. CE) has a curriculum that reinforces and builds upon students' knowledge in the planning, designing, constructing, and analyzing of infrastructure. The Master of Science in Civil Engineering (M.S. CE) requires a minimum of 31 credits, consisting of twenty-four (24) credits of courses, six (6) credits of research thesis, and one (1) credit of graduate seminar.

Course Offerings

The program includes fourteen existing graduate courses, as well as several new courses, such as:

  • Advanced Soil Mechanics
  • Structural Timber Design
  • Prestressed Concrete Design Students may complete the program as a full-time or part-time student, with the majority of courses being electives.

Learning Experience

The program provides a flexible academic environment, with a variety of courses, including interdisciplinary and interdepartmental options. Students can customize their graduate program by selecting a concentration that meets their needs and interests, such as:

  • Construction Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering

Career Outcomes

Graduates of the program are prepared to take the civil professional engineering (PE) licensure exam and launch their career as a professional civil engineer. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the median annual salary for civil engineers is $115,000, with a master's degree increasing the median annual salary by $14,000.

Accreditation

Wentworth Institute of Technology is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (formerly the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.).

Curriculum

The program includes a graduate seminar and a master's thesis, with the objective of providing a meaningful experiential application of developing knowledge to address a deficiency within society or environment. The thesis option involves an engineering project with scholarship at the level of an academic graduate work and includes the engineering design cycle, application of knowledge to address a problem, development toward establishing new knowledge or techniques, and written and oral communication.
