Radford University Program: Adapted Curriculum K-12 Concentration

Overview

The Adapted Curriculum K-12 concentration is offered through Radford University and the Virginia Consortium for Teacher Preparation in Special Education Adapted Curriculum: Supporting Students with Severe Disabilities and Autism. This program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to support students with severe disabilities and autism.

Degree Seeking Options

Earn your Master of Science in Special Education with a concentration in Adapted Curriculum at Radford University. For those with a bachelor's degree, the program is 30-39 hours of coursework and includes a 6-hour internship if you are not already teaching in the concentration area to obtain initial licensure. A non-licensure master's option with electives is also available.

Non-Degree Seeking Options

• Any of the seven courses in severe disabilities can be used for professional development and recertification points with approval from your school district.
• Provisionally licensed teachers submit their VDOE transcript analysis and work with their advisor to develop a program of study which satisfies the courses listed as deficiencies.

Program Details

The Special Education, Adapted Curriculum concentration is offered through a combination of online and distance-learning approaches, with an emphasis on hands-on experiences. The program uses real-time, interactive multipoint video conference and interactive course management to build a single virtual "classroom" among participants from each of the six universities.

Teaching Internship

To obtain a VDOE collegiate professional license in Special Education, Adapted Curriculum K-12, an additional 6 semester hours of internship experiences are required. However, students who complete one year of successful, co-supervised full-time teaching experience in this endorsement area in a public school or accredited nonpublic school during their graduate program may be given the opportunity to have this experience accepted in lieu of the supervised teaching internship.
