Music Department

The Music Department at Santa Monica College offers a comprehensive program for music majors. The program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in music theory, history, and performance.

Associate in Arts Degree - Music Major

The Associate in Arts Degree in Music requires a minimum of 39 units. The following courses are required:

• Music 2, Musicianship (2)
• Music 3, Musicianship (2)
• Music 4, Musicianship (2)
• Music 6, Diatonic Harmony (3)
• Music 7, Chromatic Harmony (3)
• Music 8, Modulation and Analysis (3)

Select 4 units from

• Music 60A, 60B, 60C, 60D, 61A, or 61B *Piano majors may be exempted by examination of the piano faculty.

Required for Applied Music Emphasis

Performance Ensemble Requirement

All Music Majors are required to be in at least one performance ensemble course for 4 semesters, to be selected from:

• Music 40, 42, 45, 52, 53, 55, 59, 64, 74, 77, or 78
