Program Overview

Departmental Policy

Each participant in an SMC ensemble must enroll for credit before the end of the second week of the course. Upon completing the maximum number of enrollments, the instructor may invite continued participation through SMC Community Education as a "community member" (excluding Musical Theatre). In rare and extraordinary circumstances, a director may make exceptions to this policy.

Enrollment Information

Music 74: Symphony Orchestra

To participate in an ensemble as a student, the following steps are required:

  1. Apply and be accepted to Santa Monica College, which may take anywhere from 2 to 7 days to process.
  2. If registering after the first day of class, an authorization from the instructor may be necessary.

Joining as a "Community Member"

  • The cost for Community Members is $89, as of Spring 2022.
  • There is no mechanism to waive or reduce the fee for students who qualify for the usual for-credit unit fee waiver.
  • If a student qualifies for the for-credit fee waiver for an ensemble experience required for their educational goals but cannot pay the $89 fee, they should reach out to the music department to strategize a solution.
    • Community participants will enroll and pay the fee directly.
    • Directions for enrollment may be downloaded for reference.
