Program Overview
The Field Studies of California - Catalina Island program is a unique opportunity for students to explore the geography, geology, and natural history of Catalina Island. The program will take place from April 13-17, 2026, and will be led by Drs. Lisa Collins and Joy Fritschle.
Program Details
- Cost: The estimated cost of the program is $650 per person, which includes transportation between San Pedro and Catalina, all activities on the island, and room and board for the week.
- Course Description: The program is a 1-unit field study course that will immerse students in the geography, geology, and natural history of Catalina Island.
- Faculty Biographies:
- Dr. Lisa Collins is a tenured professor of geology and oceanography in the Earth Sciences department at Santa Monica College.
- Dr. Joy Fritschle is a professor of geography with specialties in biogeography, environmental conservation, and sustainable development.
Program Cost and Payment
- Program Fee: $650, which includes accommodations, all course excursions, transportation between San Pedro and Catalina Island, and meals from lunch on April 13 through lunch on April 17.
- Payment Schedule:
- $250 due by February 23, 2026 (payment #1)
- $250 due by March 16, 2026 (payment #2)
- $100-150 due by March 30, 2026 (payment #3, exact amount TBD based on room assignment)
- Tuition for 1-unit Course: $46 Resident Tuition, $398 Non-Resident Tuition
Additional Costs
- Personal Spending Money: Students should bring money for buying souvenirs, doing activities not featured in the program itinerary, etc.
- Ground Transportation: Students are responsible for their own ground transportation between Santa Monica and San Pedro.
Eligibility Requirements
- Age: All participants must be 18 years old by April 12, 2026.
- SMC Student: Students must be current SMC students and take the offered courses.
- Disciplinary Infractions: Students must not have any disciplinary infractions.
- Payment: Students must pay all program fees and tuition by the deadline.

- Informational Sessions: Thursday, December 4 at 11:15 a.m. and Wednesday, December 10 at 11 a.m.
- Application Deadlines and Payment: February 23, 2026 (first payment), March 16, 2026 (second payment), and March 30, 2026 (third payment)
- Mandatory Forms: Medical Release Form and Release Form due at time of first deposit.
