Program Overview
Introduction to the Navy Preparatory Program
The Navy Preparatory Program (NPP) at Virginia Wesleyan University is designed to support students who demonstrate strong leadership potential and motivation to serve, but may require additional academic preparation or development to meet the rigorous demands of the NROTC program. This program provides a structured path for students to succeed academically, physically, and morally before transitioning into a traditional four-year ROTC scholarship at Virginia Wesleyan University within the Hampton Roads NROTC Consortium.
Eligible Students
To be eligible for the NPP program, students must:
- Be incoming first-year students only, between 17-22 years old, and accepted to Virginia Wesleyan University as full-time students
- Be U.S. citizens or on track to become citizens
- Require a year of academic and development before starting NROTC
- Demonstrate a commitment to military service and leadership
- Complete the FASFA and Virginia Wesleyan University NPP Application
Program Details
The NPP scholarship includes:
- Tuition, housing, food, and fees fully covered by Virginia Wesleyan University for the preparatory year
Students in the NPP program can expect to:
- Take foundational academic courses (math, science, English)
- Participate in physical training, military drills, and character development
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8 and pass the Navy Physical Fitness Assessment
- Complete New Student Indoctrination at Great Lakes, IL
Post-Preparatory Year
After completing the preparatory year, students who meet all requirements (2.8 GPA, pass Physical Readiness Test, medically qualified) will be:
- Awarded a four-year national NROTC scholarship within the Hampton Roads NROTC Consortium and become official members of the Unit
- Continue to earn their degree at Virginia Wesleyan University while participating in NROTC activities
- On track to commission as officers in the U.S. Navy upon graduation with a 5-year commitment post-commissioning
