BA (Hons) 3D Design and Craft

The BA (Hons) 3D Design and Craft course is a three-year program that combines traditional craft with contemporary design and hands-on experimentation. Students will have the opportunity to explore and experiment with a variety of materials, including wood, ceramics, metal, and digital processes such as 3D printing.

The Course

The course is designed to help students develop their own identity as a maker, designer, artist, or craftsperson. Alongside making, students will be encouraged to explore sustainability, research, and creative problem-solving. The program will cover a range of topics, including:

• Materials and processes: Students will learn about various materials and processes, including wood, ceramics, metal, and digital fabrication techniques.
• Design thinking: Students will develop their design thinking skills, learning how to shape ideas, materials, and objects.
• Sustainability: Students will explore the importance of sustainability in design and craft, considering the environmental and social impact of their work.
• Creative problem-solving: Students will learn how to approach complex problems and develop innovative solutions.

The Structure

The course is structured over three years, with each year building on the previous one. In the first year, students will be introduced to the processes of making in three dimensions, working across materials such as ceramics, wood, metal, and plastics. They will also explore digital methods like CAD, 3D modeling, and 3D printing.

BA (Hons) 3D Design and Craft students will have access to specialist studios and facilities, including:

• Woodworking machinery: Bandsaws, lathes, and planers.
• Metalworking tools: Welders, brazing kits, and grinders.
• Ceramics resources: Kilns, wheels, pugmills, and glaze spray booths.
• Digital fabrication tools: Laser cutters, 3D printers, and CNC routers.
• Computer suites: Apple Mac computers with industry-standard software.
