Introduction to Data Literacy with Python

The Data Literacy with Python course is a 3-credit program offered by Lund University, providing students with fundamental knowledge of handling, analyzing, and visualizing data using Python. This course is designed to equip students with practical tools to understand and manage data, a highly valued skill in many professions.

Course Overview

The course covers the basics of data analysis and visualization with Python, including creating charts and tables, cleaning and transforming data, and combining information from different sources. Students will learn to make their analysis reproducible, which is essential for others to follow and understand their work. The course also explores different data types and how to choose the right visualization to present information clearly. Additionally, students will learn about virtual environments in Python and their importance for reliable analyses.

Teaching and Learning

The course combines recorded lectures, supervised programming sessions, and project work. Students will work hands-on with Python in an interactive environment and develop their own data analysis scripts. Active participation in at least half of the supervised sessions is mandatory. At the end of the course, students will complete a project where they create a reproducible data analysis report based on assigned data. They will also critically review another student's analysis. The examination consists of the written project report, which is peer-reviewed before grading.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the course requires general eligibility and English 6. The course can be taken as an elective course in bachelor's programs or as a stand-alone course. The language of instruction is English, and the course is offered by the Centre for Mathematical Sciences.

Requirements and Selection

• Prerequisites: General requirements and studies equivalent to Swedish Upper Secondary School courses English 6/English level 2
• Selection criteria:
  • Priority is given to applicants who have applied before the deadline and are registered to a course or a program at Lund University the semester before this course starts.
  • After that, seats are allocated according to the following:
    • The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34%
    • The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34%
    • Number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32%
  • If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.

Tuition Fees

• Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens: Citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland are required to pay tuition fees.
• Full program/course tuition fee: SEK 9,250
• First payment: SEK 9,250
• Note: There are no tuition fees for citizens of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland.
