PhD Programme in Fine Arts

The Malm— Art Academy offers a four-year doctoral programme for professional artists and curators leading to a PhD in Fine Art. This programme is the first of its kind in Sweden and has produced the country's first doctors in Fine Arts.

Programme Description

The training is experimental and highly individualised, focusing on identifying, understanding, and developing artistic thinking as a specialised field of knowledge. The programme is based on artistic knowledge and artistic work, with an emphasis on independent artistic development work. The artistic work is both object and method, and the study of reflective or theoretical content is not an end in itself, but a means of artistic development.

Programme Structure

The programme is divided into different seminars/courses of 60 credits, and a documented research project of 180 credits. Professor Gertrud Sandqvist is responsible for the programme, and supervisors during the PhD are chosen in consultation with the doctoral student. The doctoral students meet at least twice a term for seminars, where all participants present updates on their research projects.

Assessment and Evaluation

During three level-enhancing seminars, after 50, 75, and 90% of studies respectively, an external assessor reviews the PhD student's project. The external assessor is the same for all level seminars and also participates in the examining committee at the public defense. The external examiner can be an artist or an academic and is chosen in accordance with the doctoral student's research project.

Previous PhD students, including Matts Leiderstam, Sopowan Boonnimitra, and Miya Yoshida, graduated from the Malm— Art Academy, Lund University, in 2006. Since then, a number of renowned artists and curators have completed their doctorates, including:
