Program Overview
Applied Computational Science, Physical Geography - Master Programme
The Applied Computational Science, Physical Geography - Master Programme is a 2-year, 120-credit master's programme that combines physical geography with advanced computations. The programme is designed to provide students with specialized skills in computational science, while also being interdisciplinary in character.
Overview
On this master's programme, students will learn how to study complex processes within physical geography and how computational science can contribute to knowledge development in society. The programme focuses on areas such as environmental and climate change, global environmental issues, and global elemental cycles. Students will gain knowledge in using numerical simulations and machine learning to make forecasts and analyses, or to replace experiments.
Teaching and Learning
The proportion of teacher-directed learning is high, with students practicing both oral and written communication and gaining experience in collaborating in groups. During the programme, students will take several courses together with students from different specializations, with opportunities to carry out projects jointly and collaborate on individual theses.
Career Prospects
Advanced computations are increasingly important in research and business, as well as in other sectors of society. Graduates of the programme can embark on several different career paths, including third-cycle education in science, or a career within industry or business.
Dates
The programme starts in the autumn semester, with the following dates:
- Start: 31 August 2026
- End: 4 June 2028
- Form: Normal learning
- Pace: Full time
- Language: English
- City: Lund
Requirements and Selection
The prerequisites for the programme include:
- A bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits, including 90 credits in science, with 15 credits in mathematics
- Proficiency in English equivalent to English 6/B from Swedish upper-secondary school The selection criteria are based on grades awarded for previous academic courses, with majors in science, technology, and mathematics, as well as a statement of purpose for the application.
Tuition Fees
Citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland are required to pay tuition fees. The full programme/course tuition fee is SEK 370,000, with the first payment being SEK 92,500.
Scholarships and Funding
There are several scholarship options available, including the Lund University Global Scholarship programme, the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Scholarship, and the Swedish Institute Scholarship. Country-specific scholarships and funding options are also available.
Programme Structure
The programme includes courses on:
- Greenhouse gases and biochemical cycles
- Mathematics for Scientists 2
- Ecosystem modelling
- Biostatistics and computational programming in Python
- Modelling in computational science
- Reproducible data analysis and statistical learning
- Introduction to modelling climate systems
- Artificial neural networks and deep learning The last semester is reserved for the thesis.
