Program Overview


Literacy Specialist Certificate

Overview

The online Advanced Certificate in Literacy Specialist prepares teachers to gain an understanding of the inter-relationships among language acquisition and literacy development, and to develop strategies for working with children who have language differences, literacy difficulties, and learning disabilities. All coursework may be completed online.


Curriculum

The Literacy Specialist Certificate requires 21 credits and includes the following courses:


  • CORE REQUIREMENTS (6 credits)
    • ED 650: Research/Theory in Developing Literacy (3 credits)
    • ED 652: Assessment in Literacy: Grades B - 12 (3 credits)
  • INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS (All Grades) (12 credits)
    • ED 655A: Early Literacy Development in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Settings (3 credits)
    • ED 755B: Literacy Instruction and Technological Applications for Middle and Intermediate Grades (3-8) (3 credits)
    • ED 677: Literacy Instructions for Diverse Learners (3 credits)
    • ED 757: Adolescent Disciplinary Literacies: Reading, Viewing, and Composing in Grades 9-12 (3 credits)
  • PRACTICA & CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE (3 credits)
    • ED 691L: Practicum in Literacy B - Grade 12 (3 credits)

Additional Requirements

  • Literacy Portfolio
  • Prior to Student Teaching, students must complete:
    • Course Deficiencies if applicable
    • DASA workshop (if not previously completed)
    • CST in Literacy 065
