Bilingual Education Certificate Program
The Bilingual Education Certificate program is a 15-credit program that leads to initial and professional Bilingual Education Extension. This extension allows the holder to teach in bilingual settings and support English Language Learner (ELL) students.
Overview
The program is designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach in bilingual settings and support ELL students. The program is offered on the NYC and Westchester campuses.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the program, candidates must:
- Have a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
- Have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above
- Have an Initial or Permanent/Professional teaching certificate as a classroom teacher (or have completed the requirements for an initial classroom teaching certificate, or a comparable certificate from another state)
- Already possess oral and written language proficiency in both English and the language of instruction
Certificate Requirements
The program requires the completion of 15 credits, including:
- ED 551: Foundations of Bilingual Education (3 credits)
- ED 556A: CMA: Teaching English Language & Literacy to Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Students (3 credits)
- ED 556B: CMA: Teaching Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Students across the Content Areas (3 credits)
- ED 558: Practicum in Bilingual Education (3 credits)
- EDG 609: Language, Literacy, and Global Perspectives (3 credits)
Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to provide candidates with a comprehensive understanding of bilingual education and the skills necessary to support ELL students. The program includes coursework in foundations of bilingual education, teaching English language and literacy, and practicum in bilingual education.
