Communication, B.A. Program Overview
The Communication major at MTSU is grounded in the liberal arts tradition and builds valuable assets that can lead to many rewarding career opportunities. Areas of emphasis offer students the skills employers are looking for to obtain bright, creative, and savvy communication experts.
Program Requirements
The Communication, B.A. program requires a total of 120 hours, including:
- True Blue Core (TBC) requirements: 41 hours
- Major Requirement: 39 hours
- Major Core: 15 hours
- Major Electives: 24 hours
- Foreign Language: 6 hours
- Minor: 15-18 hours
- Electives: 16-22 hours
True Blue Core Requirements
The True Blue Core (TBC) requirements include courses in the Foundational Skills areas of:
- Written Communication (WC)
- Information Literacy (Info Lit)
- Non-Written Communication (NWC)
- Quantitative Literacy (Quant Lit) Knowledge Domains include:
- Human Society and Social Relationships (HSSR)
- Scientific Literacy (Sci Lit)
- Creativity and Cultural Expression (CCE)
- History and Civic Learning (HCL) Students must choose at least one course from each Discovery category.
Major Requirements
The Communication Major Core (15 hours) includes:
- COMM 2300 - Interpersonal Communication
- COMM 3300 - Communication Theory
- COMM 3740 - Critical Methods in Communication
- COMM 3750 - Quantitative Research Methods in Communication
- COMM 4700 - Senior Seminar in Communication The Communication Major Electives (24 hours) require students to select 24 credit hours with a COMM prefix, with no more than 6 credit hours from lower division courses.
Foreign Language Requirement
Students must complete 2010 and 2020 or any 6 hours above the 2000 level in a foreign language, or otherwise demonstrate competency in a foreign language.
Minor and Electives
Students must complete a minor (15-18 hours) and electives (16-22 hours) as part of the program requirements.
