Program Overview

Introduction to MTeach

The MTeach program is a collaborative effort between the College of Basic and Applied Sciences and the College of Education at Middle Tennessee State University. It is designed to increase the quantity and quality of mathematics, science, and agriculture teachers in the state and nation. The program is a replication of the successful UTeach program from the University of Texas at Austin.

Program Overview

MTeach is a four-year program that leads to a degree in mathematics, agriculture, or a science, along with a Tennessee teaching license. The program emphasizes early and ongoing field experiences, allowing students to put into practice what they are learning in their respective courses. Students begin exploring the profession of teaching in their first semester, working in pairs to develop and teach lessons in a local classroom.

Mentor Teacher Information

Mentor teachers play a critical role in the development of MTeach students. They open their classrooms to pairs of MTeach students, offering guidance and support as they begin to learn about classroom teaching. Mentor teachers are responsible for:

  • Supervising MTeach students during their field experiences
  • Providing timely communication with MTeach instructors when problems arise
  • Assuming primary responsibility for classroom management
  • Coaching and evaluating MTeach students
  • Attending an orientation meeting to meet the team of students who will observe and teach in their classroom

Student Resources

MTeach students have access to various resources, including:

  • Technology resources (PDF)
  • Textbook and lesson planning resources (PDF)
  • Course readings
  • Praxis Core and Praxis II study materials
  • Residency II edTPA Livebinder

Course Offerings

The Secondary Education Minor-MTeach is for students preparing to teach mathematics and science in K-12 secondary schools. The course sequence includes:

Benefits of MTeach

The MTeach program offers several benefits, including:

  • Trying out teaching and expanding career options
  • Availability of limited scholarships for mathematics and science teachers
  • Advisors who help students get the courses they need and the best start in their career
  • Collaborative environment with a dedicated study area, work room, and resource area
  • Continued support once students begin teaching

Success of the UTeach Program

The UTeach program has been highly successful, with over 70% of graduates still in the classroom after five years, compared to the national average of 51%. UTeach graduates are also in high demand by school districts.
