Program Overview
Introduction to the Quantum Information Science Concentration
The Quantum Information Science (QIS) concentration at Middle Tennessee State University is a groundbreaking program that provides students with a strong foundation in quantum mechanics, scientific computing, and quantum optics. This concentration is housed within the Bachelor of Science in Physics and is supported by the NSF ExpandQISE program.
Curriculum and Experiential Learning
The Quantum Science and Computing concentration offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines theory with hands-on and computational training. Coursework includes:
- Quantum mechanics
- Scientific and high-performance computing
- Quantum computing fundamentals
- Quantum computing applications Students also have opportunities to engage in original research, participate in federally funded projects, and earn academic credit through research experiences and internships connected to regional and national partners.
Interinstitutional and Research-Integrated Education
A distinguishing feature of MTSU's program is its multi-institutional delivery model. Quantum courses and training activities are offered across partner institutions, including:
- Middle Tennessee State University
- Fisk University
- Meharry Medical College
- Austin Peay State University
- The University of North Florida This model expands access to quantum education and strengthens the regional talent pipeline.
Career Preparation
Graduates of the Quantum Information Science concentration are prepared for careers in:
- Quantum computing and algorithms
- Quantum materials and device research
- National laboratories
- Defense and aerospace industries
- High-technology sectors As well as for advanced graduate study in physics, quantum science, computer science, and engineering.
Quantum Computing Courses
Available courses include:
- Undergraduate course "Introduction to Quantum Computing" (PHYS-3050)
- "Professional Seminar on Quantum Computing" (COMS 7654) for students in the Computational and Data Science Ph.D. Program
Program Details
The Quantum Information Science concentration was launched in Spring 2023 and is available on-ground starting Fall 2024. It is Tennessee's first undergraduate QIS concentration and is positioned to prepare students for the quantum workforce and innovation landscape.
