Introduction to the Agronomy Program
The Bachelor of Science in Agronomy at Southwest Minnesota State University prepares students for successful professional careers in agriculture and related science. The program emphasizes a balanced and interdisciplinary curriculum to meet environmental and economic needs of the future.
Program Description
Agronomy students will study topics designed for modern agriculture, including:
- Natural science
- Crop production
- Soil fertility
- Arc GIS
- Precision agriculture
- Pest management Internships and participation in the undergraduate research conference create opportunities for agronomy students to have hands-on experience and skill-building in experimental design. Additional engaging lab studies are supported by the SMSU_Ag Field Trials located minutes from campus.

The Program is housed in the School of Agriculture, with facilities including:
- A 10-acre research plot
- A greenhouse
- Six teaching/research laboratories
- A GIS lab
- An on-campus 40-acre Wildlife Area The Ag industry surrounds the campus, offering students an ideal setting to pursue a career in agriculture. Vibrant relationships with industry provide critical support for SMSU Ag programs, including scholarships and sharing expertise through volunteerism.
