Certificate in Mathematics Teaching (Grades 5-9)

The Certificate in Mathematics Teaching (Grades 5-9) is a post-baccalaureate program designed for teachers without a strong background in mathematics or for those seeking to update their knowledge of math curriculum and pedagogy. This 30 credit-hour program is offered on a part-time basis through a combination of summer courses and evening courses supported by online delivery formats.

Program Overview

The program addresses professional development needs identified by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and the Minister's Advisory Committee on Teacher Certification. It combines undergraduate math courses in topics central to curriculum with graduate courses in education that focus on mathematics pedagogy, providing both content area support and specific pedagogical knowledge to sharpen math teaching.

Program Structure

The program consists of 10 courses, with the first six courses (18 credit hours) focusing on undergraduate mathematics courses and the final four courses (12 credit hours) focusing on graduate education courses in pedagogy, curriculum practice, and instructional design, and assessment. Most courses are scheduled on weekends or evenings during the regular academic terms and in May/June, with intensive courses scheduled at Acadia during July/August.

Learning Outcomes

In this program, students will develop:

• A broad understanding of mathematics topics and concepts central to math curriculum in grades 5-9
• An understanding of current research and theory in math pedagogy and how it informs current math curricula
• An understanding of individual, small group, and whole group curriculum and instructional design for the teaching of mathematics
• An understanding of assessment as it applies to the learning of mathematics in these key grades

Program Approval

This post-baccalaureate certificate program has been approved by the Nova Scotia Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development for use towards a higher classification of teacher's certificate. Teachers must obtain pre-approval for the certificate program through the Office of Teacher Certification to be eligible for an increase in certificate classification.
