NSERC Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships

Introduction

The NSERC Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships program is designed to recognize early-stage academic researchers in the natural sciences and engineering, and to support their research endeavors.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the NSERC Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships, candidates must:

• have held an independent academic position for 10 years or less as of December 14, 2025, with eligibility calculations incorporating career interruptions
• currently hold a grant from NSERC
• conduct research primarily in the fields of the natural sciences and/or engineering
• self-nominate, with certification from Acadia University for each nomination

An independent academic position is defined as a university faculty appointment (tenured or non-tenured) that requires the researcher to engage in research not under the direction of another individual and authorizes the supervision or co-supervision of students or postdoctoral fellows.

Nomination Process

Acadia Internal Process

The internal adjudication submission deadline is December 12, 2025. Interested candidates must express their intention to submit a self-nomination by this date. If multiple expressions of interest are received, an internal adjudication process will be used to determine which nominations will be certified by the institution. Candidates must submit:

• a completed NSERC Personal Data Form (Form 100)
• a draft of the three-page summary of the research to be pursued during the fellowship tenure

NSERC Nomination Process

Successful internal candidates will prepare the following materials for self-nomination:

1. Nomination letter with two sections:
   • Rationale for the nomination (max. three pages) describing research achievements, impacts, outreach, mentorship, and leadership
   • Description of future research directions (max. three pages) outlining original or innovative research aspects, proposed research, and approaches to training and mentoring highly qualified personnel (HQP) with a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI)
2. Completed NSERC Personal Data Form (Form 100) including a complete list of research contributions
3. Form 101 part 1 ("Application for a Grant") with notes on signatures, sensitive technology research areas, and attestation
4. Impact Assessment Form (Appendix A) if required
5. External Reviewer Suggestions Form with names and contact information of 5-7 internationally recognized experts
6. A signed Terms and Conditions Form for Nominees
