Mammography - HE Cert
The Higher Education Certificate in Mammography is designed for individuals currently working in a clinical environment within mammography services. This modular, practice-based course enables students to develop clinical skills, critical skills, and reflective thinking in practice.
Course Overview
- The course is run in partnership with the Scottish Academy of Breast Imaging.
- It is delivered part-time over one year while the student is employed in the clinical environment delivering breast imaging services.
- The course is accredited by the Society and College of Radiographers.

Course Structure
The course places the student at the heart of the learning process, with a blended learning approach including online workshops, specialist talks, tutorials, and practical learning in the workplace.
Modules
To obtain a HE Cert Mammography, students complete the following modules:
- Production of the X-Ray Image (20 credits)
- Breast Anatomy and Disease (20 credits)
- Mammography Practice for Assistant Practitioners (40 credits)
- Mammography Practice for Assistant Practitioners (20 credits)
- Person-centredness in the Breast Care Service (20 credits)
Career Opportunities
This course involves the development of specialized clinical skills, designed to improve the delivery of the breast care service. Gaining this qualification enhances career prospects within the profession of radiography.
Entry Requirements
- Current employment in a clinical environment offering mammography experience.
- 2 SQA Highers or equivalent.
- International students must provide evidence of English language competence at IELTS 7 (no less than 6.5 in any element) or equivalent.
Accreditation of Prior Learning
Students may be granted exemption from studying a module or modules up to a maximum of 60 credit points, provided they can demonstrate successful achievement of all the learning outcomes.
