The Master of Radiotherapy and Oncology/BSc (Hons) Radiotherapy and Oncology is a four-year integrated undergraduate degree course that provides students with the theoretical understanding and practical skills needed to build a rewarding career as a therapeutic radiographer.

Entry Requirements
- Scottish Higher: Standard - BBBC, Minimum - BCCC
- A Level: BCC
- Irish Leaving Certificate: H2 H3 H3 H3
- International Baccalaureate: 28 points
- International: IELTS of 6.0 with no element lower than 6.0
- Required subjects: One science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) at grade C or above at Higher/A Level or equivalent, plus English, Maths, and a science at grade C/4 or above at Nat 5/GCSE level
Course Structure
The course is structured over four years, with each year building on the previous one to provide a comprehensive education in radiotherapy and oncology.
Year One
Students will complete modules that include:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Fundamentals of Radiotherapy and Oncology
- Foundation Radiotherapy Technologies
- Holistic Care in Radiotherapy
- Introduction to Professional Practice
- Thriving in Professional Practice
- Academic Skills They will also complete a two-week placement to experience the clinical environment.
Year Two
Students will undertake modules that explore practical clinical situations, including:
- Applied Radiotherapy and Oncology 1
- Applied Radiotherapy and Oncology 2
- Applied Radiotherapy Technologies
- Health Coaching in Professional Practice
- Research Methods
- Radiotherapy Placement A
Year Three
Students will complete modules designed to develop comprehensive knowledge of safe and accurate radiotherapy delivery, including:
- Specialised Radiotherapy and Oncology
- Advanced Radiotherapy Technologies
- Theoretical and Clinical Approaches to Multidisciplinary Team Working
- Health Literacy
- Health Inequalities
- Applied Research Methods
- Radiotherapy Placement B
Year Four
Students will enhance, consolidate, and reflect on their theoretical, research, professional, and clinical skills, enabling a smooth transition to working life. They will study modules such as:
- Advancing Practice in Radiotherapy
- Professional Development for Health Practice
- Entrepreneurship and Leadership for Health Practice
- Dissertation
- Radiotherapy Placement C
Careers
Most graduates begin working as Band 5 therapeutic radiographers, with very high graduate employment rates. Later in their career, they may specialize in different aspects of therapeutic radiography.
Professional Registration/Accreditation
This course is accredited by the Society and College of Radiographers and approved by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Successful completion enables application for registration as a Therapeutic Radiographer with the HCPC and CORU, which is essential for employment in the UK and ROI.
Teaching and Learning
Students will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical workshops, with a mix of classroom and online learning. Assessments will include written and practical exams, written assignments, presentations, and viva voce.
Placements
Placements are an integral part of the course, allowing students to link theoretical knowledge with professional practice. Students will complete practice placements each year, attending a variety of placements within the NHS at locations across Scotland.
Specialist Facilities
QMU offers modern specialist spaces for radiotherapy and oncology courses, including a clinical planning suite equipped with the Varian Eclipse Planning System, clinical rooms with positioning lasers and immobilization equipment, and access to anatomical models for self-directed study.
