Introduction to the Business and Management Program

The Business and Management program at Birmingham City University is designed to develop independent-thinking professionals who can meet the demands of business employers and adapt to a constantly changing world. The program is a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business and Management, which is a recognized qualification for anyone wanting a career in business or wider business services across a range of sectors. The majority of students on successful completion of this course join an honors degree at level 6 (final year).


What's Covered in This Course?

Students will study business skills, knowledge, and understanding associated with professional practice in the international business environment. Subjects studied as part of the course will develop skills for leading, managing, and responding to change as well as tackle a range of complex business situations. Studies involve different aspects of business such as the global environment, human resources, marketing, leadership, and management, as well as accounting and finance.

Entry Requirements

  • Essential requirements: 64 UCAS Tariff points.
  • GCSE and other level 2 requirements: This course does not require evidence of GCSE qualifications.
  • A Level, BTEC, and other level 3 requirements:
    • A Level/AS Level: 64 UCAS Tariff points, with specific subject exclusions.
    • Pearson BTEC (Diploma/Extended Diploma/Extended Certificate): 64 UCAS Tariff points, with specific requirements for diplomas and extended certificates.
    • Access to HE Diploma: Pass with 60 credits, 45 credits at level 3.
    • OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications: 64 UCAS Tariff points.
    • NCFE CACHE Level 3 qualifications: 64 UCAS Tariff points.
    • WJEC Level 3 qualifications: 64 UCAS Tariff points, considered with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications.
    • Irish Leaving Certificate (Highers): Minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff points, achieved in five Higher level subjects.
    • Scottish Higher/Advanced Higher: 64 UCAS Tariff points from three Advanced Highers (CCD) or two Advanced Highers (CD) plus two Highers (CC).
  • International qualifications:
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma: Obtain a minimum of 24 points overall.
    • EU/International students: Please see the country page for further details on equivalent qualifications. In addition to academic entry requirements, international and EU students will also require IELTS 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in each band.

Fees and How to Apply

  • UK students: Annual and modular tuition fees are applicable to the first year of study. The University reserves the right to increase fees for subsequent years of study. The fee for the 2026/27 academic year is 」7,995 for full-time study.

Course Structure

The course is delivered over two years, with students completing a series of core modules. In the first year, students will complete modules such as Business and the Business Environment, Marketing Processes and Planning, Human Resource Management, Leadership and Management, Accounting Principles, Managing a Successful Business Project, Professional Identity and Practice, and Digital Business in Practice. In the second year, students will complete modules such as Research Project, Organisational Behaviour, Understanding and Leading Change, Global Business Environment, Digital Marketing, Principles of Operations Management, and Developing Individuals, Teams and Organisations.


Employability

Learning at a vocational college means the emphasis is always on employability and future careers. The course content is focused on developing personal and business skills to prepare students for a range of careers and jobs. These might include accounting work, management traineeships, marketing, purchasing, retail management, and selling. Students will develop a knowledge and understanding of business and management concepts, theories, and current issues facing businesses today.
