Introduction to BA (Hons) Textile Design

The BA (Hons) Textile Design course at Birmingham City University is a highly creative field with the potential to impact and enrich all aspects of our lives. This course nurtures fresh thinking and industry-ready designers and practitioners with expertise in the craftsmanship of Textile Design across the disciplines of Print, Weave, Knit, Embroidery, and Material Innovation.

Course Overview

Textile Design explores the potential of fibres, yarns, and processes to create cloth and materials with distinctive qualities and properties. The course is brimming with choice points to help students focus their experience as they clarify their personal interests. Students will be introduced to wide-ranging textile processes within the core technical areas of print, weave, knit, and embroidery and will have the opportunity to work with and for a range of regional, national, and global partners.

The programme reflects the diversity of contemporary textile practice. Students will develop core design and technical skills while gaining vital professional and industry awareness. The course is designed to help students identify their strengths and career interests and to build a professional portfolio that targets their career ambitions.

Entry Requirements

• Standard offer: 112 UCAS Tariff points
• Accelerate offer: 80 UCAS Tariff points
• A Level / AS Level:
  • A Level: 112 UCAS Tariff points / BBC (or equivalent)
  • AS Level: Must be in a different subject to A Levels
  • A maximum of four subjects will be considered
• Pearson BTEC (Diploma / Extended Diploma/ Extended Certificate):
  • 112 UCAS Tariff points
  • Diploma accepted with one A Level or equivalent level 3 qualifications
  • Extended Certificate accepted with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications
• T Level:
  • Merit overall
  • All subjects accepted but Craft and Design preferred
• Access to HE Diploma:
  • Pass with 60 credits, 45 credits at level 3
  • Accepted subjects: Arts, Media, Publishing, Retail, Commercial Enterprise, and Business subjects preferred but other subjects also considered
• OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications: 112 UCAS Tariff points
• NCFE CACHE Level 3 qualifications: 112 UCAS Tariff points
• WJEC Level 3 qualifications:
  • 112 UCAS Tariff points
  • Considered with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualification(s)
• Irish Leaving Certificate (Highers): Minimum of 112 UCAS Tariff points, achieved in five Higher level subjects
• Scottish Higher / Advanced Higher: 112 UCAS Tariff points from three Advanced Highers (CCD) or two Advanced Highers (CD) plus two Highers (CC)
• Welsh Baccalaureate: 112 UCAS Tariff points. Considered with three A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications
• UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma: Merit overall
• Foundation Studies (Art and Design, and Art, Design and Media): Distinction overall

Fees and How to Apply

• UK students: Ł9,790 in 2026/27
• International students: Ł18,570 in 2026/27
• Application is through UCAS for UK students and direct to the university or through a country representative for international students.
