MSc in Quality and Safety in Healthcare Management

The MSc in Quality and Safety in Healthcare Management is a postgraduate program designed to advance management skills, supporting students to lead change projects addressing critical areas in healthcare settings.

  • It is a Level 9 award on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.
  • The program focuses on quality improvement tools and interventions, patient safety, quality, accreditation, and governance.

Modules

The program consists of the following modules:


  1. Introduction to Quality & Safety in Healthcare: Explores concepts of quality and safety in healthcare, including paradigms of Safety I and Safety II, and models for learning from error and successful care.
  2. Tools & Frameworks for Quality: Develops team working skills and uses quality improvement methods to foster a culture of person-centred quality care.
  3. Leadership & Strategic Management: Explores different approaches to leadership and strategic management, including designing and implementing strategy.
  4. Accreditation & Standards: Discusses the accreditation process as an external audit of quality, and explores national and international systems of accreditation and standard setting.
  5. Clinical Governance: Focuses on providing knowledge and skills to implement a safe and quality service using a clinical governance approach.
  6. Evaluation Measurement & Research: Covers how to gather, analyse, interpret, and present data in the context of quality and safety, including the use of research methods in quality improvement and safety monitoring.
  7. Capstone Project: Involves conducting a change management or organizational development project, incorporating an implementation science or quality improvement approach.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:


  • Develop as reflective critical practitioners with knowledge, insight, and skills to determine threats to quality and safety.
  • Lead teams to improve and assure healthcare standards using quality, safety, leadership, and management competencies.
  • Apply skills in quality and safety planning, implementing, monitoring, and measurement.
  • Foster a safety culture driven by learning and accountability.
  • Evaluate and apply quality and safety research and tools to healthcare management.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must:


  • Hold a bachelor's degree.
  • Be working in the healthcare industry.
  • Meet English language requirements (unless exempt), with an IELTS score of 6.5, Duolingo 115-120, or equivalent.

Fees and Funding

  • EU Applicants: Year 1 - 8,800, Year 2 - 4,950.
  • Non-EU Applicants: Year 1 - 14,000, Year 2 - 8,000.
  • Fees include all resources, access to the online learning portal, and extensive RCSI-only databases.

Recognition and Accreditation

The program is accredited by the National University of Ireland (NUI). Recognition by ministries and bodies in all jurisdictions must be determined by individual applicants.
