About

Participants on this Department of Surgical Affairs course at RCSI's Dublin campus will take part in a variety of practical training sessions. On completion, participants will be able to:

• Develop the theoretical basis and practical skills necessary to manage the critically ill surgical patient.
• Assess critically ill patients accurately and appreciate the value of a system of assessment for the critically ill.
• Understand the subtlety and variety of presentation of critical illness and the methods available for improving detection.
• Understand the importance of a plan of action to achieve clinical progress, accurate diagnosis, and early definitive treatment, and be able to formulate a plan of action and involve appropriate assistance in a timely manner.
• Appreciate that complications tend to occur in a cascade and realize that prevention of complications is fundamental to a successful outcome.
• Be aware of the support facilities available and interact with nursing staff, other surgeons, intensivists, and anesthetists, being aware in particular of the surgeon's role in the delivery of multidisciplinary care to the critically ill.
• Understand the requirements of the patients and their relatives during critical illness and be able to inform and support both appropriately.

Entry Requirements

There are only 16 places available on each course. Applicants will be chosen not on a first-come, first-served basis, but on the places allocated to the specialty and grade.

Fees

• Total fees: €1,050

Payment Policy

Payments for this course must be made by credit card only. CPD-SS vouchers cannot be applied at the checkout for this course, as this course is not offered as part of the CPD Support Scheme.

Cancellation Policy

A refund, less 20%, will be made if written notice of withdrawal is received by the University at least one month before the course commencement date. No refunds will be made after this date. Due to a long waiting list, course bookings are non-transferrable between attendees.
