BSc in Nursing Management

The BSc in Nursing Management is a postgraduate program offered by the RCSI School of Nursing and Midwifery. This program is designed to advance the careers of nurses and midwives by developing their knowledge and skills in key managerial issues related to health financial management and human resource management.

Program Overview

• The program is delivered part-time via an active blended learning approach, including self-directed learning and live online classes approximately once every week.
• Further support is provided through the module lead, programme director, and regular online drop-in sessions.
• The award title for this course is BSc in Nursing Management, which is a Level 8 award on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.

Learning Outcomes

The program aims to equip students with the following learning outcomes:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the theory, concepts, and methods pertaining to the six modules completed on the BSc Nursing Management programme.
• Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of clinical leadership and management, research and evidence-based practice, patient safety and risk management, human resource management, health financial management, lifelong education, and professional development.
• Demonstrate the ability to use and modify advanced skills in research, evidence-based practice, leadership, management, education, and professional development to efficiently provide patient-centered care and healthcare management in complex situations.
• Demonstrate critical thinking skills required to exercise appropriate judgment in decision-making in relation to patient-centered quality care and healthcare management.
• Develop the concepts and principles that underpin problem-solving and decision-making in healthcare management, and accept accountability for all decision-making in relation to healthcare services and management.

Module Descriptions

Evidence-Based Nursing and Midwifery

This module aims to develop students' ability to search databases, critically appraise national and international literature, and inform an evidence-based approach to patient care.

Reflection on Nursing and Midwifery Values for Legal and Ethical Practice

This module introduces students to the concept of reflection and provides a forum to develop critical reflection skills for professional practice. It also covers the basic knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts, principles, and values of ethics and law applicable to nursing and midwifery practice.

Education for Professional Practice

This module enables students to plan continuous professional development activities for themselves, colleagues, healthcare professionals, and patient/client groups, promoting a person-centered approach to professional practice.

Leadership and Management

This module provides students with the knowledge necessary to develop management and leadership skills, encouraging growth and development of the individual learner in the context of rapid change in nursing and midwifery services.

Human Resource and Financial Management

This module offers an overview of contemporary issues in human resource management and employee relations for effective people management in healthcare services. It also develops an understanding of finance and financial issues in the current healthcare system.

Patient Safety, Quality Improvement, and Risk Management

This module provides comprehensive knowledge and understanding of patient safety, quality, and risk management concepts and their application to healthcare from a nursing and midwifery perspective, focusing on the HSE's strategic approach to improving quality.

Progression Options

Following the completion of the BSc in Nursing Management, several progression options are available for further career and educational development, depending on career goals. The RCSI School of Nursing and Midwifery offers a range of postgraduate certificate, diploma, and MSc programs.

The program begins in September each year.

Assessment Format

The program is assessed through a range of modalities, including essays, poster presentations, oral presentations, and online quizzes.

Accreditation and Recognition

All programs offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery are accredited by the RCSI, the National University of Ireland, and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Recognition by bodies in other jurisdictions must be determined by individual applicants.

Admissions

Entry Requirements

All applicants must be registered nurses or midwives on the active register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or the relevant regulatory body in their country of practice before commencing a module of study.

English Language Requirements

English language requirements for all programs are published on the RCSI website.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL considers learning acquired as a result of experience. It may be used to gain admission to programs where an applicant may not have obtained the standard entry requirements. Exemptions from program modules that duplicate learning already demonstrably acquired through prior learning may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Fees and Funding

• Annual fee: 6,595
• The fee includes the 45 NUI fee.
• An additional application fee of 50 is non-refundable.
• Fees are subject to review annually.
• Fees can be paid by bank transfer, with full details provided before the program commencement.
• Fees can be paid in three installments: 40% before the program starts, and the remaining payments in two 30% installments in November and February of the year of study.
