Program Overview

The Clinicians as Educators Effective Teaching Skills program is a micro-credential course designed to support and promote the development of clinicians as teachers and assessors in clinical practice. This 5-week online course aims to enhance teaching and presentation skills, with a focus on practical approaches to clinical bedside and classroom teaching.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

• Plan and organise teaching sessions for large and small groups
• Develop teaching and presentation skills
• Identify and utilise appropriate teaching resources
• Devise a teaching/lesson plan for an educational event
• Devise an assessment strategy for an educational event
• Devise an evaluation strategy for an educational event

Course Structure

The course incorporates synchronous online classes with no in-person component, featuring:

• Buddy system: regular contact between buddies
• Weekly discussions via discussion boards
• Compilation of a teaching portfolio

Assessment

• Formative assessment: Self-assessment, peer assessment, and feedback from experts
• Summative assessment: Planning, delivering, and evaluating an online micro-teaching session, and submitting a 3,000-word teaching portfolio

Admission Requirements

To be considered eligible for the program, applicants must:

• Be a medical doctor with a Bachelor of Medicine Degree (Level 8 NFQ)
• Hold any specialty and level from intern onwards
• Submit a full CV, proof of sponsorship (if applicable), and evidence of English-language qualification (if applicable)

English Language Requirements

Candidates must have:

1. IELTS >6.5 (or equivalent) in all sections, or
2. Completed undergraduate or postgraduate studies full-time in the medium of the English language (three or more years cumulatively)

Fees and Funding

• Fees: 1,100
• ECTS credits: 10
• NCHDs working in the HSE full-time may be able to use their Continuous Professional Development Support Scheme (CPD-SS) funding to cover the cost of this online micro-credential
• The course can be fully funded through the HSE Training Support Scheme fund (TSS)
