Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Program
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) is introducing a new Bachelor of Dental Surgery program, which will commence in September. This community-based dental program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become competent dentists.
Program Overview
The program is tailored to address the chronic shortage of dentists in Ireland and other countries. By placing community connection at the heart of dental education, the curriculum aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of the social forces that influence oral health. The program encourages students to build their careers in the service of communities that are in greatest need.
Community and Interprofessional Engagement Module
The Community and Interprofessional Engagement module is a key component of the program. This module is designed to foster a deep understanding of the vital role that community organizations play in supporting oral health across diverse populations. From the first year of study, students will be immersed in learning opportunities beyond the classroom, including:
- Interviewing representatives from local community organizations to build awareness of social care services and health challenges
- Collaborating with external organizations to design and deliver real-world projects focused on promoting healthy behaviors
- Engaging with other health disciplines to deepen their understanding of integrated care
- Completing a quality improvement project to enhance standards in dental practice
Education for Social Impact
The principles of community and interprofessional engagement will be scaffolded across the four-year degree program. Students will develop an awareness of the determinants of health and inequalities in health in the community, alongside an understanding of population health improvement. They will learn how to consider the wider health economy and communicate effectively in professional discussions and transactions.
Real-World Partnerships
The program has established partnerships with key community organizations, including the HSE Dental Service (North Dublin City) and Transit HUB Citywest (supporting asylum seekers and refugees). These partnerships will provide students with a tangible platform to understand and address health inequalities, from designing smoking cessation campaigns to working with schools on oral health promotion.
