Master of Research
The Master of Research is a postgraduate degree that enables students to develop advanced research techniques, gain specialized knowledge, and produce original contributions in their chosen field. Overview
The Master of Research at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) is a two-year degree that focuses on independent, original investigation under academic supervision. Students will develop advanced research skills, subject-matter expertise, and contribute new knowledge to their field. The degree is available in various research areas, including Astronomy, Agricultural Science, Computer Science, Creative Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Health and Wellbeing, Humanities, Law and Justice, Mathematics, Nursing and Midwifery, Physics, Psychology, Sport and Exercise, and Statistics.

As a graduate of the Master of Research, students will develop fundamental research skills and specialist area knowledge, enhancing their career prospects or enabling them to proceed to further higher degree by research studies. Degree Structure
The Master of Research degree requires students to complete 16 units of study. The degree structure includes:
- Research Training Courses (2 units)
- Masters Research Project Courses (14 units)
Students can choose from two options:
- Master of Research General (16 units)
- Psychology Research (16 units)
Degree Requirements
To graduate from the Master of Research, students must successfully complete the required units of study. The degree requirements include:
- Completion of 16 units of study
- A substantial thesis or research project
- Enhancement of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, research and evaluation skills, and research design capabilities
Entry Requirements
To be considered for entry into the Master of Research, students must satisfy the following requirements:
- Completed a 3-year degree at an Australian university or equivalent, with a GPA of 5.0/7.0 or above, or equivalent score, in a relevant discipline
- Completed a 3-year degree at an Australian university or equivalent, and have successfully completed a coursework masters, with a GPA of 5.0/7.0 or above, or equivalent score, in a relevant discipline
- Acceptance will be subject to the availability of, and endorsement by, a UniSQ supervisor
English Language Requirements
Students must meet the applicable English language requirements, which include:
- IELTS (Academic) - Minimum overall score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6.0 in each of the four components subscore - listening, reading, writing, and speaking
Fees and Scholarships
The estimated 2026 annual fee for the Master of Research is AUD 36,160. Students may be eligible for scholarships, including the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset scheme.
