Program Overview
MBA Program Overview
The MBA program at the University of West Florida is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in business administration. The program is cohort-based, and students generally take 6 credit hours per semester.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the MBA program, students must meet certain requirements. These include:
- A grade of B or better in the following subjects within the last 10 years: Economics, Managerial Accounting, Financial Accounting, Finance, Calculus, Statistics, e-Business/Information Systems Management, and Marketing.
- Students may be admitted without completion of prerequisites but will need to finish any outstanding foundational proficiencies prior to starting the MBA core program.
- The application process involves submitting an application and supporting documents, which are then evaluated by the UWF Graduate School and the MBA Office.
Application Process and Timeline
The application process for the MBA program involves the following steps:
- Submitting an application and supporting documents.
- Evaluation by the UWF Graduate School.
- Evaluation by the MBA Office.
- Communication of the admissions decision to the Graduate School.
- Notification of the decision to the student.
Evaluation Criteria
Students are evaluated for admission based on a holistic review of their application, including:
- Undergraduate GPA.
- Graduate admission scores (if applicable).
- Letters of recommendation.
- Resume.
- Answers to application essay questions.
Express Admission
Express admission is offered to certain students who are earning an undergraduate degree from UWF. This type of admission allows students to bypass the online application and application fee. There are two types of express admission:
- Express admission offered by the undergraduate department.
- Express admission offered by the graduate school, which includes a 6 credit hour scholarship.
Minimum Test Score Requirements
The MBA program requires a minimum test score of 450 on the GMAT or its equivalent on the GRE (149 verbal/149 quantitative). The program does not have a preference between GMAT and GRE. Waivers for the graduate admission test requirement are available, and all applicants are automatically reviewed for eligibility.
Advising Appointments
During an advising appointment, students will discuss the program, including a comprehensive overview of the MBA at UWF. The advisor will review the student's status in terms of prerequisite classes and discuss options for completion. The advisor will also answer any questions the student may have about the program and outline the next steps in the process.
Course Selection
The program is designed for students who generally take 6 credit hours (2 classes) each semester. The advisor will inform the student which courses to take each semester. The program is cohort-based, and not all courses are offered every semester.
Degree Plan
Once a student is admitted, the advisor will create a degree plan that shows the student's path through the MBA program, including the courses to take and the semesters in which to take them.
Time to Completion
The time to completion for the MBA program is based on the course projection and degree plan. Students can complete the program in as few as 5-6 semesters if they follow their degree plan.
Academic Standing
To remain in good academic standing, students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher at the end of each semester. If a student's GPA is below 3.0, they will be placed on academic probation for the next semester. If the student does not bring their GPA up to at least 3.0 at the end of the next semester, they will be a candidate for academic suspension.
Grade Forgiveness
There is no grade forgiveness at the graduate level. A passing grade is a grade of C or higher. If a student earns a C- or below in a course, they must retake the course. Both the original grade and the retake grade are calculated in the student's GPA.
Transfer Credits
Transfer credit is not guaranteed, but graduate credits may be considered for transfer if they meet certain criteria:
- The credits were earned from an institution that is AACSB accredited.
- A grade of "B" or higher was earned in the graduate work.
- The credits were completed within six years from the date the UWF graduate degree is awarded.
- Students may have a maximum of six semester hours or two courses (whichever is greater in credit) of graduate work at other universities accepted toward their program requirements at UWF.
- The department chairperson's permission is required for the credits to be accepted.
Online and Face-to-Face Programs
The curricula for both the online and face-to-face MBA programs are the same, regardless of modality. Students can switch between the online and face-to-face programs once, but the course rotations are different. There is no hybrid MBA program that allows students to combine online and face-to-face courses.
Exams and Tests
In the online MBA program, professors may administer exams in the following ways:
- Proctor U (with a fee).
- Respondus Lockdown Browser/Monitor (no charge).
- Testing in person at a testing facility (with possible fees).
Reduced Load or Sitting Out a Semester
Students can take a reduced load or sit out a semester, but this may impact their time to degree completion. The advisor will update the student's plan to redistribute their courses.
Financial Aid
The UWF Financial Aid Office manages aspects of financing education. Students can refer to the Financial Aid Office for options on financing. The Cashier's Office also offers a payment plan. Face-to-face students may be eligible for limited departmental scholarships and graduate assistantships, but online MBA students are not eligible.
Software and Hardware
Once enrolled, students will have access to ArgoApps, which are hosted applications and virtual desktops that allow UWF students to access specialized computer applications via the Internet. Additional programs may be required for certain courses, and students will be notified by the instructor if this is the case.
