Program Overview


University of West Florida Nursing Program

The University of West Florida offers a Nursing program designed to prepare students for a career in nursing. The program is accredited and provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become competent nurses.


Overview

The Nursing program at the University of West Florida is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program that prepares students to become clinical generalists who are leaders, managers, and life-long learners. The program refines clinical skills, stimulates student awareness of research applications, facilitates the practice of active inquiry, fosters the ability to think and respond critically, and promotes the desire for advanced study.


Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Nursing program, students must meet the following requirements:


  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Minimum score of 75% on the TEAS entrance exam
  • Completed all General Education requirements, including foreign language
  • Completed all Nursing common prerequisites with a grade of "C" or better
  • Documentation of required Nursing Program immunizations

Degree Requirements

The BSN program requires a minimum of 120 semester hours, including:


  • 60 semester hours of lower division coursework
  • 48 semester hours of upper division coursework
  • 12 semester hours of elective coursework

Progression

To progress in the Nursing program, students must:


  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Earn a minimum grade of "C" in all Nursing courses
  • Complete all Nursing courses in sequence
  • Meet all program requirements, including clinical hours and immunizations

Program Dismissal

Failure to maintain the academic and professional standards specified in the pre-licensure Traditional BSN student handbook may result in dismissal from the Nursing program.

Civic Literacy Requirement

The University of West Florida requires students to demonstrate competency in civic literacy by passing an assessment or taking a designated course, such as AMH 2020 United States Since 1877 or POS 2041 American Politics.


Mathematics Pathway

The Mathematics Pathway requires students to complete a sequence of courses, including:


  • STA 2023 Elements of Statistics
  • MAC 1105 College Algebra
  • MGF 1130 Mathematical Thinking

Common Prerequisites

The Common Prerequisites for the Nursing program include:


  • BSC 1085 Anatomy and Physiology I

The RN to BSN track is designed for students who have already completed an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree and are licensed as Registered Nurses (RNs). The program is offered online and requires students to complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework.


Admission Requirements for RN to BSN Track

To be admitted to the RN to BSN track, students must:


  • Have an ASN degree from an accredited program
  • Be licensed as an RN
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Complete all common prerequisites with a grade of "C" or better

Progression in the RN to BSN Program

To progress in the RN to BSN program, students must:
