University of West Florida Art Program

The University of West Florida offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art, with specializations in Art History, Pre-Art Therapy, and Studio Art.

Program Overview

The B.A. in Art is awarded to students in three areas of specialization: Studio Art, Pre-Art Therapy, and Art History. Within the Studio Art Specialization, students can elect concentrations in Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography, and Ceramics, as well as New and Mixed Media.

Art History Specialization

• General Education: Students must satisfy all additional State of Florida requirements, including College-Level Communication and Computation, Civic Literacy, and Foreign Language requirements.
• General Education Curriculum:
  • Communication: ENC 1101 English Composition I, ENC 1102 English Composition II, and a Communication Elective.
  • Humanities: Choose one course from the Humanities Core and one additional course from either the Humanities Core or the Humanities Breadth.
  • Mathematics: Choose one course from the Mathematics Core and one additional course from either the Mathematics Core or the Mathematics Breadth.
  • Natural Sciences: Choose one course from the Natural Sciences Core and one additional course from either the Natural Sciences Core or the Natural Sciences Breadth.
  • Social Sciences: Choose one course from the Social Sciences Core and one additional course from either the Social Sciences Core or the Social Sciences Breadth.
• Civic Literacy Requirement: Students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy by passing an assessment or taking AMH 2020 United States Since 1877 or POS 2041 American Politics.
• Mathematics Pathway: Students are advised to complete the following courses to fulfill the mathematics pathway: MGF 1130 Mathematical Thinking and MGF 1131 Mathematics in Context.
• Common Prerequisites: State-mandated common prerequisites must be completed prior to graduation, including ARH 2050 Western Survey I, ARH 2051 Western Survey II, ART 1300C Drawing I, ART 1301C Drawing II, ART 2201C Two-Dimensional Design, and ART 2203C Three-Dimensional Design.
• Major: The major requires 27 hours, including ARH 3590 Non-Western Art, ARH 4830C Museum and Gallery Studies, ARH 4930 Theory and Methods in Art History, and ARH 4450 Modern Art.
• Upper Division Electives: Students must complete sufficient 3000/4000 level electives to total at least 48 semester hours at the 3000/4000 level.

Pre-Art Therapy Specialization

• General Education: Same as Art History Specialization.
• Civic Literacy Requirement: Same as Art History Specialization.
• Mathematics Pathway: Same as Art History Specialization.
• Common Prerequisites: Same as Art History Specialization, with the addition of ART XXXX (6 hours).
• Additional Core Requirements: ART 2400C General Printmaking, ART 2500C Painting I, ART 2701C Fundamentals of Sculpture, ART 3208C Color Theory for Studio Artists, and ART 3213C Ideas and Concepts in Art.
• Art Major Courses: ART 3312C Drawing III, ART 3760C Ceramics, ART 3713 Figure Sculpture, ART 3769C Sculptural Ceramics, and ART 4941 Internship in Pre-Art Therapy.
• Psychology Courses: PSY 2012 General Psychology, CLP 3144 Abnormal Psychology, DEP 3103 Child Development, and PPE 4003 Theories of Personality.
• Major-Related Electives: Students must complete sufficient 3000/4000 level electives to meet UWF's requirement of 48 semester hours in the upper division.

Studio Art Specialization

• General Education: Same as Art History Specialization.
• Civic Literacy Requirement: Same as Art History Specialization.
• Mathematics Pathway: Same as Art History Specialization.
• Common Prerequisites: Same as Art History Specialization, with the addition of ART 2500C Painting I and ART 2701C Fundamentals of Sculpture.
• Lower Division Electives: Students must complete sufficient 1000/2000 level electives to satisfy at least 60 semester hours in the lower division.
• Major: The major requires 30 hours, including ARH 3590 Non-Western Art, ART 3213C Ideas and Concepts in Art, ART 3312C Drawing III, ART 3760C Ceramics, and 3000/4000 level Art History electives.
• Major-Related: Students must complete 30 hours of 3000/4000 level Art, Humanities, or Advisor Approved Elective Courses.

Art Minor

Students may earn a Minor in Art by completing art and/or art history courses (with the exclusion of ARH 1000 Art Appreciation) with permission of an assigned art advisor. Of the 18 semester hours required for this minor, at least 12 hours must be taken at UWF, and at least 12 hours must be at the 3000/4000 level. Art majors may not earn this minor.
