Chemical Engineering - M.S.

Chemical engineering is the practice of developing new materials and energy for the benefit of humankind. Chemical engineers design, develop and operate industrial processes. The M.S. in chemical engineering is available in either a fully online format or in person.

For both the online and in-person learning options, all students in the chemical engineering graduate program can choose from the following areas of study:

In addition, many students in our program elect to customize their degree by conducting research that combines their passions and academic abilities. Admission Requirements

Applicants to this program must have a bachelor's degree from an engineering program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc. There also needs to be an undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, though other factors may be considered. In the case of an applicant having an undergraduate degree in another engineering or STEM program, there may be a requirement to take prerequisite courses for admission. One letter of recommendation from an academic or professional source is a required document along with an application form and transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I apply to the program with a science (chemistry or biology or biochemistry) Bachelor's degree?
    • Yes! Qualified applicants will be accepted as non-matriculated into a two-semester "bridge" program where they take five or six prerequisite courses. After successful completion of the prerequisite courses, they are matriculated in the M.S. degree program. Many students have successfully taken this route and are now employed as chemical engineers.
  • Can I get involved in research or do a research-based master's degree (i.e. a thesis)?
    • Yes! Students can use either 3 or 6 elective credits to get credit for research under the supervision of department faculty. A 3 credit "research project" would take place over 1 semester. A 6-credit thesis would be performed over 2 semesters.
  • How long does the program take to complete?
    • For Manhattan undergraduates that participate in the seamless master's program, the program can be completed in 2 semesters (1 additional year). For all other students attending full-time, the program is typically completed in 3 or 4 semesters by taking 2 or 3 classes each semester. For students attending part-time, the program can be completed in approximately 3 years by taking 1 or 2 classes per semester.
  • When are classes offered?
    • Nearly all of our classes are offered at night (6:30 pm) or in the late afternoon to accommodate the schedule of working professionals. This allows students that are employed full-time to attend our program. We also offer graduate classes during the summer so that students do not have to overload on credits in any one semester.
