Introduction to the Medical Laboratory Assistant Institutional Certificate
The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) prepares students to play a central role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Our students graduate prepared to work in hospitals, research facilities, and more, to be problem solvers in an ever-changing field.
Program Structure
MLS offers a ladder-format program, with the four-year curriculum divided into two programs, the Associate of Applied Science program followed by the Bachelor of Science program. Students apply for the AAS first, then later apply for the BS degree.
Admission Requirements
- Degree-seeking students must complete Math and English General Education requirements.
- Students must review the applicant checklist, which reviews each step needed to be a successful candidate for this program.
- Many program prerequisites also count as general education requirements.
Program Prerequisites
- Program prerequisites may have pre- or co-requisites.
- If choosing Track II in the MLS bachelor degree program, students will need to complete prerequisites before enrolling in certain courses, such as CHEM 1210 PS: Principles of Chemistry I or MICR 2054 LS: Principles of Microbiology.
Health Sciences or Zoology Anatomy & Physiology
- The Health Sciences Integrated Human Anatomy & Physiology (HTHS) class series or the Zoology Human Anatomy & Physiology (ZOOL) class series are required for entrance into most College of Health Professions programs.
- Each series consists of two classes.
- Students need to complete either the HTHS or ZOOL series.
Additional Requirements for Track II Pre-Med Students
- Track II pre-med students should also attend a pre-med meeting hosted by the College of Science.
Program Details
The Medical Laboratory Sciences program is designed to prepare students for a career in medical laboratory sciences. The program is offered in a ladder format, allowing students to progress from an Associate of Applied Science degree to a Bachelor of Science degree. The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to work in hospitals, research facilities, and other healthcare settings.
