Program Overview
Introduction to the REACH Weber Program
The REACH Weber program at Weber State University is designed to empower youth with type 1 diabetes through connection and belonging. This program, which stands for Recreate, Educate, Advocate, and Climb Higher, is Utah's only year-round recreation education program for youth with type 1 diabetes.
Program Overview
REACH Weber was started in 2023 by Eddie Hill, associate professor and REACH program director. The program aims to provide support for maintaining a healthy lifestyle among youth with type 1 diabetes and their families. It offers a unique opportunity for parents and their children to connect on a consistent basis, addressing the need for more connection beyond what traditional summer camps offer.
Partnerships and Collaborations
Weber State University has partnered with a local chapter of Lions Club of Utah, Intermountain Health, and Primary Children's Hospital to inspire and guide healthy lifestyles among youth with diabetes through camps.
Program Activities and Events
- REACH Weber hosts monthly camps on Saturdays throughout the year in the Swenson Gym on WSU's Ogden campus.
- These camps include physical and educational activities such as rock climbing and mountain biking.
- Diabetes education is also a key component, focusing on blood sugar management and strategies for achieving positive health outcomes.
- A five-day summer camp is held annually, typically from August 4-8, targeting tweens and teens.
- All events are free to attend, but registration is required.
Program Philosophy and Operation
The program is data-driven and grounded in the self-determination theory, a framework that emphasizes autonomy, connectedness, and meaningful knowledge as influences on motivation and behavior. While overseen by Eddie Hill, the program is volunteer-run, with volunteers coming from different communities, including a significant number of WSU students who are eager to connect with and support the youth participants.
Community Outreach and Impact
REACH Weber is fundamentally a community outreach program, aiming to provide opportunities that might not be available elsewhere for youth with type 1 diabetes. The program's success is measured by the positive impact it has on the participants, with the goal of empowering them to manage their condition effectively and live healthy, active lives.
