3-Week Documentary Filmmaking Summer Camp

The 3-Week Documentary Filmmaking Summer Camp is a program designed for students aged 14-17. The program is held in Los Angeles and New York, and it provides students with hands-on training in documentary filmmaking.

Program Description

The 3-Week Documentary Filmmaking Program is an immersive and hands-on course that introduces students to the art of nonfiction storytelling. Over the course of three weeks, students explore documentary filmmaking techniques, develop their own unique perspectives as storytellers, and gain practical experience in producing, shooting, and editing their own films.

Core Subjects

Students engage in the following core subjects throughout the program:

  • Producing and Directing
  • Camera and Lighting
  • Production Sound
  • Editing

Final Project

By the end of the program, each student directs their own final documentary film, using the skills, techniques, and styles explored during their first two projects. Students have the creative freedom to choose whether their film will be observational, interview-driven, or a combination of both.

Tuition and Fees

The tuition for the 3-Week Documentary Filmmaking Summer Camp is $4,525. There are also special discounts available, including:

  • Military Dependent Discount: 10%
  • SAG/AFTRA Discount (Active) Student: 15%
  • Sibling Discount (on one application): 10%
  • Returning Students: $25.00 app fee waived (after applying)

Additional Expenses

Students will also incur additional expenses on their own productions, which vary depending on how much film they shoot and the scale of the projects.

Institutional Fees

The NYFA has institutional fees, which are subject to change. The fees are only guaranteed one semester at a time and are subject to increase or decrease.

Annual Increase

There is an expected annual increase in tuition and fees. The costs listed do not include housing, food, transportation, books, additional necessary supplies, activities fee, or health insurance.
