Pacific Lutheran University Programs

Undergraduate Programs

  • The university offers various undergraduate programs, including:
    • Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A.E.) Degree
    • Preparation for Teaching in Private and/or Christian School
    • Certification Options for Persons Who Hold a Baccalaureate Degree From a Regionally-Accredited Institution
  • The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Requirement must be fulfilled for all baccalaureate degrees.
  • Students can also pursue an individualized major, which allows them to develop a personally designed, interdisciplinary, liberal arts major.

Individualized Major

The Individualized Major program offers junior and senior students the opportunity to develop and complete a personally designed, interdisciplinary, liberal arts major. The course of study culminates in a senior thesis/capstone.


  • To be eligible for this program, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher, although exceptional cases may be considered.
  • The program requires students to compose a committee of faculty representing at least two disciplinary perspectives and create a detailed plan of study.
  • The plan of study must include:
    • A statement of objectives, describing what the degree is expected to represent and why the individualized course of study is more appropriate than a traditional degree program.
    • A program of study, outlining how the objectives will be attained through sequences of courses, reading programs, regular coursework, independent study, travel, off-campus involvement, personal consultation with faculty members, or other means.
    • A program of evaluation, describing the criteria to be used to measure achievement of the objectives and specifying the topic of the senior thesis/capstone.
    • A statement of review, describing how previous coursework and life experiences have prepared the student for the individualized study program.
    • Letters of recommendation from faculty members, commenting on the feasibility of the proposal and the student's ability to carry it out.
