Program Overview
Clinical Psychology Internship Program
The Clinical Psychology Internship Program is a one-year doctoral internship based on a "practitioner-scholar" training model, emphasizing experiential learning and research. This program features rotations in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with a focus on psychological care in rural areas.
Program Description
The program provides the final level of training for doctoral-level clinical psychologists. It is an independent, full-time program supervised by full- and part-time psychology faculty in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine. The program offers an excellent training opportunity in both adult and child psychology, with didactics and supervision of clinical care.
Training Model
The training model is based on a "practitioner-scholar" approach, training interns to be generalists in their practice of psychology, informed by research in the field. The program takes a developmental focus, beginning with a baseline assessment of the intern's competencies to the eventual mastery of these competencies at or beyond the entry level of practice.
Training Goals and Objectives
The program aims to achieve the following competencies:
- Competency 1: Research - critically evaluate and disseminate research or other scholarly activities
- Competency 2: Ethical and Legal Standards - demonstrate knowledge of and act in accordance with ethical principles and legal standards
- Competency 3: Individual and Cultural Diversity - demonstrate an understanding of how personal/cultural history, attitudes, and biases may affect interactions with diverse individuals
- Competency 4: Professional Values and Attitudes - behave in ways that reflect the values and attitudes of psychology
- Competency 5: Communication and Interpersonal Skills - develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of individuals
- Competency 6: Assessment - demonstrate current knowledge of diagnostic classification systems and functional and dysfunctional behaviors
- Competency 7: Intervention - establish and maintain effective relationships with recipients of psychological services and develop evidence-based intervention plans
- Competency 8: Supervision - apply knowledge of supervision in direct or simulated practice
- Competency 9: Consultation and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills - demonstrate knowledge and respect for the roles and perspectives of other professions
Attendance Requirements
The internship training program is designed to meet the 1,800 clock hour standard, with interns expected to be at their specified sites for a minimum of the equivalent of 50 weeks at 40 hours per week. At least 40-50% of the intern's time should be spent in service delivery, with approximately 20-25% dedicated to didactic training and study.
Training Activities
Clinical training activities include:
- Assessment (psychological testing, diagnostic interviewing, and report writing)
- Treatment (both short- and long-term therapy)
- Interdisciplinary consultation Clinical training is provided through direct client assessment and treatment, as well as through the observation of faculty members' work.
Supervision
Intern supervision is provided by faculty members of the internship agency or by qualified affiliates of that agency. Regularly scheduled individual supervision is provided by one or more doctoral-level licensed psychologists, at a ratio of no less than one hour of supervision for every 20 internship hours.
Didactic Training/Group Supervision
Interns complete a minimum of 2 hours of didactic training and/or group supervision per week, for a total of approximately 100 hours per year. Didactics include a variety of training experiences, such as case conferences, seminars, in-service training, and guided readings/discussion.
Training Sites
Interns have the opportunity to work at a number of training sites, with primary training occurring in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine. Interns may also have the opportunity to work in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Stipends & Benefits
