Program Overview
International Preceptorship in General Dentistry
The international preceptorship program in general dentistry offers experience in the didactic and clinical aspects available through the Department of Dentistry, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. This program familiarizes international dental graduates with the principles, practice procedures, and protocols of a general dental practice in the United States.
Program Overview
The program is designed to provide international dental graduates with the opportunity to observe and learn various methods and materials used in a general dental practice in the United States. By participating in this program, individuals can become more knowledgeable about the expectations and clinical and didactic rigors of a general practice residency, making them more competitive when applying for dental residency programs in the U.S.
Program Structure
The program consists of two consecutive weeks, usually the first and second weeks or the third and fourth weeks of a month. Participants will observe and learn from various clinics, including:
- Main Clinic
- Oral Surgery Clinic
- Periodontics Clinic
- Endodontic Clinic
- Dental Operating Room (Cabell Huntington Hospital)
Program Schedule
The tentative program schedule is as follows:
Week #1 (Second Week of the Month)
- Monday: Orientation, Main Clinic
- Tuesday: Main Clinic
- Wednesday: Oral Surgery Clinic
- Thursday: Dental Operating Room (Cabell Huntington Hospital), Main Clinic
- Friday: Periodontics, Periodontics
Week #2 (Third Week of the Month)
- Monday: Main Clinic, Main Clinic
- Tuesday: Oral Surgery Clinic, Oral Surgery Clinic
- Wednesday: Endodontic Clinic, Endodontic Clinic
- Thursday: Dental Operating Room (Cabell Huntington Hospital), Main Clinic
- Friday: Oral Surgery Clinic, Oral Surgery Clinic
- Saturday: Grand Rounds + Journal Presentations, Main Clinic
Program Details
- The program can accept up to two participants per session.
- Appropriate professional attire and grooming are required.
- Jeans are not permitted in the clinic.
- Participants will be expected to present two didactic assignments: Grand Rounds (subject material to be assigned or of the preceptor's pre-approved topic).
Benefits of the Program
The program is familiar with international dental graduates and the rigors and challenges they face in order to practice in the U.S. The program has multinational faculty, some of whom are international dental graduates themselves, who understand the process and challenges international dental graduates face to practice in the U.S.
Application and Admission
- The fee for this international preceptorship program is $1,900.
- Accommodations, lodging, and food are the separate responsibility of the participant.
- The application fee is $100, which is non-refundable.
- The full tuition is required upon acceptance into the program.
- Candidates should apply 60 days prior to their preferred session for the program start date.
Cancellation Policy
- Cancellation four or more weeks prior to the start of the program: 100% refund of program fee
- Cancellation between two and four weeks prior to the start of the program: 50% refund of program fee
- Cancellation less than two weeks prior to the start of the program: No refund of program fee
Certificate of Completion
Individuals who successfully complete the preceptor program will receive a certificate of completion signed by the program director.
