Introduction to Marshall University's Swim School
Marshall University's Swim School offers a comprehensive program for children of all ages and skill levels. The program is designed to provide quality instruction in a safe and comfortable environment, with a focus on proper technique and water safety.
Program Overview
The Swim School program is available for children as young as 10 months old and offers a range of classes to suit different ages and abilities. The program is divided into several levels, each with its own set of skills and objectives.
Swim School Levels
The Swim School levels are as follows:
- Swim Babies: For children 10 months to 2 years of age, this parent-and-child program introduces basic skill and safety concepts.
- Swim Tots: For children 2-3 years of age, this parent-and-child course helps toddlers become comfortable in and around the water.
- Preschool Level 1: For children 3-4 years of age, this level introduces basic aquatic skills and helps children become familiar with the aquatic environment.
- Preschool Level 2: This level builds on the skills learned in Preschool Level 1 and helps children develop greater independence in the water.
- Preschool Level 3: This level focuses on developing correct propulsive skills in the water and introduces children to more complex aquatic skills.
- Swim School Level 1: Intro to Water Skills: For children 5-13 years of age, this level orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills.
- Swim School Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills: This level builds on the basic aquatic skills learned in Level 1 and helps children develop more comfort and independence in the water.
- Swim School Level 3: Stroke Development: This level focuses on developing the freestyle and backstroke at proficient levels for short distances.
- Swim School Level 4: Stroke Improvement: This level improves participant technique and endurance of the freestyle and backstroke.
- Swim School Level 5: Stroke Refinement: This level refines technique and increases endurance of all swimming strokes.
Program Details
Each level of the Swim School program has its own set of skills and objectives. Upon successful completion of each level, children will be able to demonstrate a range of aquatic skills, including:
- Entering and exiting the water safely
- Floating and gliding on front and back
- Performing arm and leg movements
- Swimming short distances using various strokes
- Demonstrating water safety skills and awareness
Class Schedule and Policies
Swim School sessions are regularly five classes long, with some sessions being four weeks due to holidays or special events. Classes are 30 or 40 minutes in length, depending on the class level. The program has a range of policies in place, including:
- Appropriate swim wear is required
- Swim goggles that do not cover the nose are permitted
- Children with long hair should have it secured or wear a swim cap
- Children not completely toilet trained must wear a reusable swim diaper
- Towels are not provided
- Refunds are not issued for programs
- Students may be transferred to another class within the same session on a space-available basis
Participant Progress Reports
Individualized progress reports will be given out in person or sent to the email listed on the account at the end of each session group lesson session and private lesson package completed. These reports will identify the skills that the student is able to complete, those that they can almost complete, and those they are unable to complete or were not introduced. The class level they are to sign up for next will be identified.
