Program Overview
Introduction to the Regents Bachelor of Arts (RBA) Program
The Regents Bachelor of Arts (RBA) degree program is a nontraditional program designed for adult students. It provides a sound general educational foundation without required major courses, allowing students to create a personalized course plan with the assistance of an advisor.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the RBA program, students must meet the general Marshall University admission requirements and be at least three years out of high school. Exceptions are made for students with an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S. community college degree, who may enter the program directly without waiting three years.
Graduation Requirements
The total credit hour requirement for the RBA program is 120 credit hours, including any College Equivalent Credits (CECs). Students must also complete 36 general education hours, 30 upper division hours (300-400 level), and maintain a grade point average of 2.00 or better at Marshall University and overall.
Course Requirements
The RBA program requires the completion of general education courses, including:
- Communications: 6 semester hours
- Natural or physical sciences: 3 semester hours
- Mathematics/Computers: 3 semester hours
- Social Sciences: 6 semester hours
- Humanities: 6 semester hours
- Additional approved 3 credit hours from natural or physical sciences or mathematics or computers
- Additional approved credit hours from any of the above categories: 9 semester hours

Anthropology, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Anthropology area of emphasis requires the completion of 18 hours of Anthropology courses, including:
- ANT 201: Cultural Anthropology (CT)
- ANT 322: Archaeology
- ANT 361: Ethnographic Research
- ANT 491: Anthropological Theory
- Three additional Anthropology courses at the 300-400 level
Communication Studies, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Communication Studies area of emphasis requires the completion of 18 hours of Communication Studies courses, including:
- CMM 103: Fund Speech-Communication
- 15 additional hours of Communication Studies courses at the 300-400 level
Creative Writing Option, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Creative Writing Option area of emphasis requires the completion of 15 hours of 300-400 level courses listed as Creative Writing by Marshall's Department of English.
Criminal Justice, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Criminal Justice area of emphasis requires the completion of 18 hours of Criminal Justice courses, including:
- CJ 200: Intro to Criminal Justice
- 15 additional hours of Criminal Justice courses at the 300-400 level
Cyber Forensics, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)

Religion Studies, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Religion Studies area of emphasis requires the completion of 18 hours of Religion Studies courses, including:
- Any 18 hours of 300-400 level RST courses
- At least 6 hours must be taken through Marshall University
Sociology, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Sociology area of emphasis requires the completion of 18 hours of Sociology courses, including:

Studio Art, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Studio Art area of emphasis requires the completion of 15 hours of 300-400 level courses with necessary prerequisites. Each area requires two prerequisite classes (6 hours). The areas include:

Web Application Development, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Web Application Development area of emphasis requires the completion of 21 hours of Web Application Development courses, including:
- CS 110: Computer Science I
- CIT 263: Web Programming I
- CIT 313: Web Programming II
- CIT 365: Database Management
- CIT 466: Database Programming
- CIT 416: Advanced Web Programming
- ART 454: Motion Design II
- Other courses can be substituted with the permission of the CIT department chair
Women Gender Sexuality Studies, Emphasis (Regents Bachelor of Arts)
The Women Gender Sexuality Studies area of emphasis requires the completion of 18 hours of Women Gender Sexuality Studies courses, including:
- WGS 101: Intro Women Gender Sexuality
- 15 hours of WS or WGS designated courses at the 300-400 level
- To be acceptable, courses must have the WS designator
